Town centre news: Wimbledon Masterplan and YMCA

The YMCA has been keen to redevelop its building for several years and is in advanced stages of design. Last summer it showed its plans for a new 13 storey building to Merton Council's Design Review Panel. This is a private meeting of local architects and experts who advise the Council.

The current plans would significantly increase the height of buildings on The Broadway (we estimate double once you take into account the plant works on the roof).

A YMCA representative told FOWTC that 'We will be going through how best to incorporate the Panel’s feedback with our development partners over the next few weeks and intend to come back to you with our revised ideas and timescales soon after that.'

The YMCA and its development partner recently presented and consulted on their revised plans for the site. These can be viewed on the Wimbledon YMCA development project website here. The YMCA development site allows you to comment on the proposals and we encourage you to do so.

background: Merton Council's Masterplan

Merton Council has published the final draft of its Masterplan for Wimbledon (now called a Supplementary Planning Document or “SPD”).

This document draws on the earlier consultation in 2018/19 and sets out what development Merton Council would like to see in Wimbledon.

It represents guidance to developers rather than policy and, in planning terms, carries less weight than the Council's Local Plan.

Disappointingly, the SPD largely ignores residents' previous feedback, especially in relation to tall buildings in the town centre.
