Town centre news: Wimbledon Masterplan and YMCA

The YMCA has been keen to redevelop its building for several years and is in advanced stages of design. This summer it showed its plans for a new 13 storey building to Merton Council's Design Review Panel. This is a private meeting of local architects and experts who advise the Council.

The current plans would significantly increase the height of buildings on The Broadway (we estimate double once you take into account the plant works on the roof).

A YMCA representative has told FOWTC 'We will be going through how best to incorporate the Panel’s feedback with our development partners over the next few weeks and intend to come back to you with our revised ideas and timescales soon after that.'

More broadly in the town centre, we understand that the Wimbledon Masterplan will be the subject of public consultation in the Autumn.  We will keep you informed on both topics.

background: Merton Council's Masterplan

Merton Council is developing a Masterplan outlining its long-term vision for Wimbledon. It will seek to identify opportunities for economic growth and enhancements needed of the public space.

Economic growth is important but so, we believe, are the needs of the local community. We want Wimbledon to thrive, but do not believe many residents want to see intensive development as has been seen in neighbouring boroughs like Kingston and Croydon.

The Masterplan will also address how Crossrail 2’s proposals for Wimbledon Station will integrate with the town centre. The knock-on impacts, such as traffic and parking, will have a real impact on those that live here.

This is why we believe local residents should play an important role in shaping the town centre Masterplan.
